Safety Information
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) is recommended for application:
Recommended Tools
- Shovel, pick, hoe, digging equipment
- Wheelbarrow
- Bow rake and/or grade rake
- Pressurized sprayer or hand application depending on project size
- Masonry Trowel
- Vibratory plate compactor or small walk-behind roller compactor
- Hand tamper
- Rototiller or other mixing mechanism such as a milling head for a UTV
Suitable Applications / Materials
- T-PRO™ works best with 3/8″ minus to 1/2″ (1-1.25 cm) minus crushed stone blends, including but not limited to decomposed granite (DG), crushed limestone, granite screenings, asphalt millings and sand.
- Crushed sharp angular rock aggregates to fines (11-15%). Please consult Lithic Industries representative concerning application to aggregates with PI>25 for appropriate dosing.
- Do not apply if rain or other wet conditions exist. Do not apply T-PRO™ 24 hours before or after rainfall. In excessively wet conditions, allow subbase and aggregates to visually dry prior to application.
Recommendations for T-PRO™ Commercial Installations
- Lithic Industries recommends a test section to confirm suitability of materials and project conditions prior to application for best results.
- Lithic Industries recommends an ambient and surface temperature range of above 50° F for optimal curing. Shaded, low sunlight, or cold temperatures will lengthen cure times. Lithic Industries does not recommend application at or below freezing (0° F) for T-PRO™ curing or storage.
- When possible, crown or slope the finished grade of a T-PRO™ treated surface to allow sufficient drainage and runoff.
- A 2–4″ (5–10 cm) subbase layer and 1.5″–2″ (3.8–5 cm) surface material layer compacted to 95% or greater is recommended by Lithic Industries for infusion of T-PRO™. Please follow guidelines previously outlined.
- Alternatively, T-PRO™ may be mixed directly into the 2–4″ base layer (see infusion installation section) at 1 gallon of polymer concentrate mixed with 1 gallon of water, placed between edge banding, and then compacted. The surface seal coat can be applied after curing has completed using 1 gallon
Preparation
- Aggregate testing should include sieve and modified proctor analysis for proper dosage calculations. Please consult your local Lithic Industries representative for assistance.
- Aggregate classification and PI analysis are also recommended.
Prepare Subgrade
- Lithic Industries recommends excavating the subgrade 4–6″ (10–15 cm) below for commercial grade surfaces and heavy equipment traffic.
- Tightly woven weed or landscape fabric is not recommended, as it can trap moisture below the surface layer. Lithic Industries recommend removal of organic material prior to application.
Edge Confinement
- Edge banding is recommended for best results, optimal compaction, and to reduce degradation of edges caused by light wheel or foot traffic.
- Some common examples of edge confinement include but may not be limited to the following:
- Concrete curbing
- Bender board
- Plastic or aluminum edging
- Pressure-treated lumber
Contractor Installation of T-PRO™ High Performance Infused System
SOILS TESTING
- ASTM-C136 sieve analysis
- ASTM-D1557 modified Proctor with Atterberg Limits (if clayey soil)
- All testing should be performed by an accredited physical testing laboratory
- Please consult your local Lithic Industries representative for project consultation.
EQUIPMENT
- Reclaimer – with programmable water/poly infusion system OR
- Asphalt and soil stabilization millers
- Spraying equipment: spray bar or pressurized application is recommended.
- Water trucks – standard water trucks equipped with PTO driven pump and spray bar recommended.
- Lithic Industries recommends minimum 10-ton compactors with vibratory capabilities.
- Pneumatic compactor with offset wheel axle is acceptable.
INFUSION PROCESS
- Step 1: In-situ moisture test – Lithic Industries recommends an NDG or similar test to measure moisture prior to initial application for accurate dosing.
- Step 2: Polymer application and blending – T-PRO™ should be applied to the aggregate using the Lithic Industries proprietary calculation methods. The expected coverage at 2” depth is 32 SF per 1 gallon of concentrate. The expected coverage at 4” depth is 15 SF per 1 gallon of concentrate. The expected coverage at 6” depth per 1 gallon of concentrate is 11 SF. Consult your local Lithic Industries representative for assistance. The polymer to water ratio for application is 1 gallon of concentrate to 1 gallon of water.
- Step 3: Grading –Roads should be graded to specifications outlined for the project geography and per the guidelines established by the project manager.
- Step 4: Initial compaction – after the area has been graded, compaction should be conducted using the steel drum compactor achieving 95% compaction standards by the project engineer.
- Step 5: Finish grade – After the 95% compaction rate has been verified, the top 2–5 mm of the surface should be finish graded to fill in small surface depressions and holes created from the density testing.
- Step 6: Final surface compaction – final surface compaction should be conducted following 95% compaction methods as outlined by the project manager or program engineer.
- Step 7: Close treated area to traffic and allow the surface to begin the cure process BEFORE applying seal coat. The surface should look visibly dry.
Commercial or Residential Dust Control
The seal coat should be applied evenly over the surface using 2–3 passes to apply the total amount of required polymer and water using 1 gallon of T-PRO™ concentrate mixed with 4 gallons of water. Seal coat application rates and dilution ratios are project-specific due to changing soil characteristics, traffic load, and customer expectations.
The T-PRO™ polymer expected coverage for dust control is 90 SF in most cases. Please contact your local Lithic Industries representative for the polymer to water ratio and appropriate dosing. Lithic Industries recommends using the proprietary spray bar calibrated for precision application. Please see your local Lithic Industries representative for more details.
After the seal coat has been applied, the area should be closed to traffic for a minimum of 24 hours to allow the polymer to begin drying and curing. The time may vary depending on weather and other external factors.
Cleanup
Immediately after use, flush all pumps and lines with water, continue flushing until water runs clear. Clean tools by simply rinsing with water and a soft bristle brush. If T-PRO™ is allowed to dry on any equipment surface, lines, or pumps it is not corrosive or harmful however, it will be difficult to remove.
Storage
Store T-PRO™ out of direct sunlight in with a temperature range of 40°–90° F (4.4–32.2° C).
Maintenance Recommendations
- Lithic Industries recommend TWO maintenance coats to effectively reach optimum surface strength and water resistance.
- Treated areas should withstand normal conditions for 12 months before a maintenance coat is needed.
- To rejuvenate and increase the life span of the surface, apply a topical maintenance coat at approximately 120 ft²/gallon pure polymer mixed with 1 gallon of concentrate to 3 gallons water.
- If surface has been damaged, make any repairs to the surface before applying a maintenance coat.
- To repair a section of T-PRO™ treated base, place the appropriate amount of crushed stone in a 5-gallon (19-liter) bucket and add enough T PRO to make a visibly damp mixture of aggregate. You should be able to make a “ball” in your hand with the material. Consult your local Lithic Industries representative for more information.
- Brush pure T-PRO™ polymer into the hole or area with a brush as a primer. Mix aggregate and polymer with a trowel or drill-powered mixing wand and apply the mixture to the repair area using a masonry trowel or equivalent (i.e., like a pothole repair). Smooth the material to grade. Use a hand tamp to compact into place.
