Introduction

The client presented a need to stabilize the aggregate base and provide dust suppression for the driveway at the family home. Migrant dust was a significant problem with vehicular and foot traffic.

Project Details

The driveway job site included 16,000 SF of California DOT base rock mixed with native limestone topsoil. The decision was made to treat the base material with TPRO 550 diluted to maximize stabilization and dust control. The dilution rate was calculated using a proprietary calculation based on the density of the aggregate including the optimal and insitu moisture. The driveway measured 1,000’ length by 16’ width at a depth of 4” utilizing 1,100 gallons of polymer. Equipment needed for the project includes one loader with a bucket and blade, one skid steer with a milling attachment, one 10-ton roller and one 4,000-gallon water truck with a 2” hose attachment.

Challenges

The job site provided limited workspace for batch mixing and only one entrance/exit to the property. The owners allowed 3 days to perform the work, and we had mechanical issues as well as unknown electrical line damage that presented during the project. The landscaping around the family home was extensive and expensive and the owner demanded that this aspect be uncompromised by the project

Solution

TPRO 550 was an excellent consideration for this project as it has an FDA designation for food contact and allows for the landscape to flourish and grow in the presence of the polymer. The equipment was mobilized the day prior to commencement and extended daylight allowed for surface preparation using the skip/drag attachment to a depth of 4”. On day one, the surface material was infused with polymer emulsion, graded and compacted. On day two, the polymer seal coat was applied and the chemical matrix for the aggregate closed. The material was allowed to cure for 24 hours and a 2” surface rock(3/4-black and white granite) was dropped to finish the project.

Results

TPRO 550 polymer provided a stabilized driveway with exceptional dust suppression and a very satisfied customer. The compaction was noted by the NDG test >95% for the aggregate base material. The customer will enjoy stability for years to come while minimizing maintenance costs-Intelligent Stewardship at work
